Speaking to shoppers about the common myths of fostering

St Christopher’s fostering team had an information stand at Tesco Milton, in Cambridge, on Saturday. This was our opportunity to answer the many questions potential foster carers have.

We have a frequently asked question page on our website, as we know that there are common myths or concerns from potential foster carers. But today we wanted to take a bit of time to talk about two of them in a bit more detail.

I am too old to foster

There is no upper age limit to become a foster carer. All we ask is that you have the time, energy and commitment to make a difference to a young person’s life. Our foster carers range from 21 to 71 years old. All have different skills to help them play an active role in a child’s life.

Can you foster if you’re single?

One of the questions we are asked the most is: “Can I foster if I am single?” The answer is yes, you can. Foster carers come from all walks of life. We look for people who are passionate and willing to fight for the needs of their child.

Jackie, a foster carer from the West Midlands, did a great podcast for us on fostering as a single mum. Watch it by clicking on the video below:

Next Saturday (18 January 2014) we will have an information stand at Rivergate Shopping Centre, Vierzen Platz, Peterborough. Please do come along if you would like to speak to a member of the team about fostering.
