So what is LGBT Fostering and Adoption Week?

It’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender fostering week. We hear you ask: “But I can’t foster because of my sexuality?” Well that’s not true. Anyone who has the ability to help a child or young person reach their potential can foster, regardless of their sexuality.

The myth

A recent report in Community Care highlighted that one in three people from the LGBT community thought their sexuality would be a barrier to them fostering. This is a lot of potential foster carers who could be providing a loving home to a vulnerable young person.

Just think about it. The Fostering Network has said we need 8,600 new foster carers in the UK and a third of the LGBT community are ruling themselves out!

The truth

The truth is whatever your background or sexuality if you have the right skills you can foster. Fostering is about providing a child or young person with a stable and secure home and helping them to grow and develop.

In a recent blog post we talked about the role of a foster carer and we would encourage anyone who thinks they could also make a difference to a young person’s life to enquire today.

Events

We hold events throughout the year for anyone who wants more information about fostering. Our next events are:
  • Fostering information stand at Asda Harwich, Essex on Monday, March 12 from 9am to 5pm
