When we asked Dawn and Roger last year how they felt they had made a difference to their foster child’s life, they were both in agreement that education was a massive area. That is why they agreed to share with us some top tips for helping a young person do better at school.

In case you missed it, here is Dawn and Rogers reflection on the difference they made to their foster child:

Their top tips where:
  • Set a good example by reading yourself. Make getting a good book to read a treat.
  • Make learning fun and think outside the box to fit the capabilities of the child.
  • Be involved with the school and complement any strategies they are putting in place, the child will see you getting friendly with the school too and start to trust the teachers.
  • Always go to plays, concerts, assemblies and parents’ evening. This will let them know you are interested in them and proud of their achievements.
  • Build their self-esteem outside school with activities they are good at, such as football, Scouts or Guides. This will allow their social skills to develop and their confidence will be carried on into the class. They start to believe they can achieve.
