A week in the life of a fostering support worker – Day 5

Pete Smart’s final post is all about Brentwood, motorbikes and getting muddy with our young people, showing the range of activities our support workers do every week.

Day 5 – Friday

Early start as I have a meeting in our Chelmsford office with my line manager to discuss how things are going. We finished around lunchtime and then I’m off to pick up Roger and Allen from their homes and then we drive to a rural part of Essex to meet up with Jason and his carer.

Jason and his carer have two motorbikes and there’s farmer’s field we can use the bikes on. We all have lots of goes on the bikes and it’s a great activity. We all get very muddy, but that just adds to the fun!

The carer who has organised the activity is focused on community activity and has offered the motorbiking experience to all our young people so that they can have a go. I am spreading the word amongst our fostering community and the response has been very positive.

The three young people get on really well and have a great time. This is really important as this is an opportunity for them to develop their communication and social skills. They enjoyed themselves so much we arranged to do it again in a month.

It was a fantastic experience for the young people and as they are all petrol heads they take turns to help maintain the bikes during the day and can’t wait to go back and have another go. We finish around 6pm and then it is time to drop everyone off.

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading my posts this week. It has been a busy but positive week for all involved. If you do have any questions about the training and support we provide our foster carers give us a call on 0800 234 6282.
