Christine started fostering 11 years ago and transferred to
St Christopher’s in 2012. She has been looking after the same two young people
since she was approved as a foster carer. In this week’s blog she will be
sharing her experience.
When they came into my care they had been neglected. I had
to work really hard with my foster children to build trust and make sure they
knew however hard they tested me I wouldn’t give up on them.
My advice is to give them time to come to you and when they
do want to talk drop everything you’re doing and listen, even if it means
turning dinner off from cooking. I have provided them with a lot of support,
love and understanding to create an environment where they can strive.
I spent a lot of time researching schools to make sure that
they both get to attend outstanding schools. They also do homework clubs and
specialised lessons to help them in their chosen careers.
Both of the children are now in their final year of school.
The oldest is studying zoology at a specialised school, which I worked hard
to secure him a place at. He is also working towards his Duke of Edinburgh Award. I was always keen to encourage them to volunteer for charity and help those
less fortunate.
The youngest is working towards a career in the armed
forces. Both she and her brother attend Army Cadets, something that helped her
build her confidence and social skills.
Fostering is not easy. It’s hard, it’s emotional, there are
sleepless nights, but when it all comes together you feel on top of the world.
I am proud of my foster children and where they are now.
